Masterminds are working in a former factory in St. Petersburg in a bid to manipulate public opinion over the illegitimate war in Ukraine, according to expert research.

Their followers are targeting British senior ministers by spamming them with pro-Putin and pro-war messages in the comment sections of social media platforms.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said, “We cannot allow the Kremlin and its dastardly troll farms to invade our online spaces with their lies about Putin’s illegal war.

“The UK government has alerted its international partners and will continue to work closely with allies and media platforms to undermine Russian information operations.”

Activity was detected on Twitter, Facebook, Telegram, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok. Influencers on TikTok are paid to amplify propaganda.

The tactics are similar to those used by the ISIS terrorist group and QAnon political conspirators in a large-scale effort to sway public opinion.

The Prime Minister was targeted as well as Defense Secretary Ben Wallace, German leader Olaf Scholz. Trolls use comment sections, which makes it harder for social media companies to detect.

Activity was detected in Western media in 13 countries, with the major role played by Telegram channel Cyber Front Z, an expert search funded by UK broadcasts.

The movement would consist of a core of professional trolls followed by a larger number of sympathetic accounts.

Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries said last night: “These are insidious attempts by Putin and his propaganda machine to deceive the world about the brutality he is inflicting on the Ukrainian people.

“This evidence will help us more effectively identify and suppress Russian disinformation and follows our decisive action to prevent anyone from doing business with Kremlin-controlled RT and Sputnik outlets.”
