Caution is needed in determining whether the coronavirus restrictions in England can be lifted next month or if the situation could turn badly “very, very quickly”, warned a professor whose argument against collective immunity has helped trigger England’s first lockdown.
Sir Tim Gowers, professor of mathematics at the University of Cambridge, told the Guardian that the downside of being “a little more careful” was much less than that of being wrong.
Boris Johnson says the end of coronavirus restrictions could be pushed back beyond June 21 after the Indian variant of became the dominant strain in the UK.
Three-quarters of new cases are now the Indian mutation, which means cases have doubled in a week.

Mr Hancock warned the public that the Covid-19 pandemic was ‘not over yet’ as June 21 was only weeks away.
Dr Jenny Harries confirmed that the vaccines appear to be effective in the newer variants and that as cases increase, the number of infections in hospitals is decreasing.
