Leeds United managerial target Diego Martinez wanted by Everton

Leeds United director of football Victor Orta is sure to be nervous as Everton are reportedly considering a move for Diego Martinez.

According to Mirror, the former Granada manager is on a three-man shortlist which includes Niko Kovac and Wayne Rooney.

According to the Spanish media Diario of Cadiz, Getafe is the third club he is set to turn down as he awaits a move to Elland Road this summer to replace Marcelo Bielsa.

However, with Everton’s interest, things could get much more complicated and the Spaniard might give in.

He is known to love the Premier League and would certainly want to do well in the English top flight.

Getting promoted to Granada was already a remarkable achievement in itself, but he then secured European football with them.

Much like Everton, it’s also the next step in Leeds’ progression cycle, so it only makes sense that the 41-year-old would be considered an option.

Although he is relatively young in terms of age, he has amassed almost 500 games of management experience.

This is because he quit playing football at the age of 20 and soon turned to coaching.

It’s a move that worked and if Bielsa actually steps away at the end of the season, then Martinez would be ideal as his replacement.

It remains to be seen whether the Toffees will approach him or not as he is expected to say yes to the next Premier League club offering him a job.
