The challenge came around five minutes before Phillips was substituted, with the 26-year-old attempting to play on but unable to continue.

Phillips was seen grimacing on the bench after his withdrawal. The midfielder now faces a race to be fit for England’s Nations League game against Italy on Saturday.

Victor Orta’s biggest Leeds United transfer test as Jessie Marsch opts for change of plan

Although Joe Gelhardt has impressed, he is still very young and it would be unfair to expect so much from a 20-year-old.

As such, a striker is one of Orta’s priorities this summer.
