Leeds United teenager van den Heuvel recovers from horror injury

Young Leeds United goalkeeper Dani van den Heuvel is recovering from a car accident earlier this summer, according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay.

Van den Heuvel, 19, is said to have suffered “damaged vertebrae in his neck” due to the crash, which also involved some of his Dutch youth international teammates.

Hay doesn’t see the Dutch teenager returning to action any time soon. However, he points out that the goalkeeper’s overall health is far more important than that at the moment.

“The van den Heuvel stuff is mean, actually,” Hay said on the latest episode of The Phil Hay Show podcast (August 5, 10m00s).

“It was him and some other young Dutch internationals involved in a car accident earlier this summer.

“He has damaged vertebrae in his neck and it’s much less a football problem than a health problem.

“Marsch said, ‘We were much more concerned about his well-being than when he’ll be back and when he’ll be able to play’.

“Van den Heuvel I’m sure will be worried about it himself but it’s not good at all and I don’t know when we can expect him back in the mix.

“It’s not that we expected him to play this season, but he’s been around the goalkeepers over the last year and we’ve seen him a lot.”

worrying

All we can do is wish van den Heuvel the best and that he fully recovers from this neck injury.

The 19-year-old was more than likely the third-choice goalkeeper at Elland Road last season behind Illan Meslier and Kristoffer Klaesson.

We can’t say for sure, as these two were in every matchday squad last season.

Van den Heuvel is a Dutch Under-19 international and it appears he was involved in the car crash around the same time he was playing in the Euro Under-19 qualifiers.

It’s a shame because it will take a long time for him to recover from this neck injury.

And while we hope he can play football again soon, more important is the young sensation’s long-term health and recovery.

The Leeds goalkeeper situation is one that has had to be sorted out for some time.

Meslier and Klaesson are both very young for the team’s number one and number two spots.

However, AS reports that advanced talks are underway to sign free agent Joel Robles, who is 32 and has Premier League experience from previous spells at Wigan and Everton.
