Leeds United were keen on the Championship striker but the club would not sell late
Leeds United were interested in signing Joel Piroe before the transfer window closed but Swansea City ruled out a sale late on deadline day, according to The Athletic.
Los Blancos wanted to add another striker to their ranks amid Patrick Bamford’s injury problems, Rodrigo’s injury and Daniel James’ move to Fulham on loan.
They failed with moves for Bamba Dieng and Cody Gakpo; Piroe is a versatile player, a centre-forward by profession who is equally at home on both wings.
Before finally adding Wilfried Gnonto from Zurich, Leeds were keen to acquire the 23-year-old Dutchman’s services but Swansea ruled out selling him before the deadline.
Piroe made 47 appearances for Swans in all competitions during the 2021/22 season, scoring 24 goals and providing six assists.
So far this season, Piroe has seven appearances to his name for Swansea, registering two goals along the way.
Leeds drew Everton midweek at home 1-1, coming from behind in the game where Rodrigo dislocated a shoulder but Bamford returned from injury for Jesse Marsch’s side.
Next up for the Whites is a trip to the scene of their great escape from relegation last season, with Brentford awaiting them on Saturday.
