Letter to Boris Johnson: The EU has beaten you once again on the details – JAYNE ADYE | Express commentary | Comment
This is a shortened version: Last week it was reported that the government will ban the display of the EU flag on all buildings, unless there is a building permit from the central government. Good news for many Brexiteers who see no reason why we should always be forced to see the blue flag with the ring of stars wither our streets any longer. After all, why should the UK fly the flag of a foreign international organization when we have already left the Bloc?
However, over the past few weeks several sources, including a response I personally received following an access to information request, have all confirmed that due to the EU programs to which the UK government has subscribed, it is legally mandatory to display the EU flag and EU propaganda on public space infrastructure / adaptations projects that have received EU funding.
So was the government not aware of this requirement, or was Boris just trying to get an easy good news headline by announcing an EU flag ban, hoping none of us would realize the truth?
These are very serious questions that must be answered, because the people of this great country do not like to be taken for fools.
If the PM wants to follow through on his claimed policy, then why not do something or repay the £ 54million received from the EU under the COVID-19 Stimulus Fund – and make sure he there are no EU flags or propaganda displayed anywhere in this country now that we have left the EU!
This sum of money is clearly not worth the attack on our sovereignty that it created.
Over the past five years, this government and that of Theresa May have made endless empty promises to the British public at large, but time and time again actions fall short of words. Is it not time for the government to finally start following up on its claims in the press?
If a mistake has been made, then admit it. Do not try to hide from mistakes and hope that no one notices them, because the electorate will not have the wool in their eyes.
Brexit was about ‘taking back control’ and re-energizing the UK political system to allow people to trust politics – and politicians.
However, with half-truths like these on the display of EU flags and propaganda, everything we see is more or less the same.
As long as this cycle of empty promises continues, the Prime Minister is doing nothing more than tarnishing his own legacy and wasting an opportunity for real change.
