Arthur Watts (nicknamed “Old Arthur” because he lived to be 108 years old) was born into slavery on a Missouri farm in 1837. From his childhood his daily task was to prepare outdoor barbecues on the large “farmhouse”. of production ”which enslaved him. There he first began preparing sauces and seasonings to complement his barbecue – recipes that would serve him well after his emancipation in 1863. As a free man, he continued to make a living as a master. popular pitcher, preparing massive barbecues for city festivals, county fairs and large-scale social functions in central Illinois.

While Arthur never learned to read or write, his eldest son Eudell – the first of five generations to bear the name – wrote the recipes, and descendants continued to prepare them on special occasions. When friends kept asking for the sauce (one of them even going so far as to make it their annual holiday gift to customers), the family decided it was time to go into business.

“We made minimal changes to the original recipes,” says Eudell Watts IV, who runs the business with his father, Eudell Watts III. “We have taken care to stay true to the original flavors.”
