Plans filed for 1,200-bed Leeds Arena student scheme

The plan will involve the construction of a historic 38-storey tower at the northern end of the site in the first phase and another tiered student block of 7, 12, 17 and 20 floors at the southern end of the site which will will be presented later in phase two.

Detailed plans have been submitted for these buildings, which will be constructed by Downing’s construction arm, at the site along Clay Pit Lane and Merrion Way.

Downing said he hoped to begin construction of the phase one tower in the last quarter of this year, subject to approval.

This will be equipped with a system of flush unitized facades comprising a mixture of polished anodized aluminum and transparent glass panels arranged alternately.

Block A facing Clay Pit Lane and Marrion Way will provide 714 student rooms

The existing Yorkshire Bank building, which currently occupies much of the south site, will be demolished.

Stepped Block B overlooking Clay Pit Lane and Elmwood will provide 490 student rooms

The stepped student block envelope will mirror the surrounding buildings with a combination of terracotta rainscreen cladding panels, medium gray anodized aluminum rapid vent panels and medium gray aluminum framed windows.

Master plans have also been made for a 117,000 square foot multipurpose event space between the student housing blocks.

A five-storey event space building will be located between the two planned student buildings next to Leeds Arena
