Signing Sergino Dest won’t be enough at Leeds United

Leeds United are one of the clubs interested in signing Barcelona right-back Sergino Dest in the summer transfer window.

Competition is tough at FC Barcelona’s right-back position with Dani Alves, Sergi Roberto and Óscar Mingueza in attendance, which could be one of the reasons the US international could leave Spain for regular minutes in another club.

TEAMtalk reported that Victor Orta wants to move quickly to bring the American to Elland Road, following in the footsteps of Brenden Aaronson this summer.

According ESPNthe Catalans also tried to offload the full-back during the January transfer window but that move couldn’t materialise.

Good shot but not enough

Signing Dest, who made 21 La Liga appearances last season, could be a smart move for Leeds as Luke Ayling and Stuart Dallas are likely to miss the start of next season through injury.

However, the 21-year-old looks more capable of being an attacking right-back option, which might not be enough for Leeds to enter the campaign having conceded 79 Premier League goals last season.

Dest as he likes to stay on the pitch, rather than sitting and defending and for him to establish himself as a regular in the white formation, the former Ajax player needs to improve his defensive skills.

From the Leeds side, the thought process must be that the youngster is likely to settle in easily as he would play under an American manager while having a USMNT teammate in the form of Aaronson at his side.

However, Leeds don’t have to put all their eggs in Dest’s basket and ensure they have enough options in the full-back department for the 2022-23 campaign.
