Whelan drops Gelhardt’s big prediction for 21-22
Leeds United could already have a replacement for Tyler Roberts in Joe Gelhardt, according to Noel Whelan.
The former white striker, speaking exclusively to Football initiate, has heard from his sources that Gelhardt, 19, is better deployed in a number 10 position rather than a number nine.
Gelhardt played for Leeds United’s Under-23 last season and scored 11 goals in 16 Premier League 2 appearances.
His form earned him a call-up to the first team, but he never made his Marcelo Bielsa debut despite his eight nominations on the bench.
Whelan believes Gelhardt can challenge Roberts, who is attracting interest from Newcastle after snubbing Leeds’ latest contract offer (May 17) next season.
“A loan is possible for Gelhardt but I think he will have his chance in the first team next season”, he said Football initiateby Dylan Childs.
“We haven’t signed another number 10 yet and Tyler Roberts hasn’t signed a new contract. There might be a ready-made position for him on the team if Roberts leaves.
“From the people I’ve spoken to, Gelhardt is the best in a number 10 role, not a number nine.
“I would expect that after an incredible season with the Under-23s, he would have his chance. There isn’t much he can do with the Under 23s. You have to bide your time with Bielsa.
“It’s time for him to take the next step and gain some experience. Whether on loan or in the first team.
“Whether Tyler Roberts stays or leaves, Gelhardt will imagine his chances of taking his place on the team next season. I think he could get ahead of Tyler Roberts.
“I want to see the young players fighting against the first team players for their place in the team.”
